Magnesium Rods & Bars

The AZ31B Certainly the most widely available of the magnesium grades, AZ31B is produced in a wide variety of shapes from sheet and plate through bar forms. It is commonly used as an alternative to aluminum alloys due to its high strength to weight ratio. Care must be taken in machining the grade, however, because the chips and powder can be flammable. Typical uses include variety of aerospace applications and general commercial applications requiring good properties and high strength to weight ratio.

The AZ61A alloy has lower strength than AZ80 and requires the slowest rate of deformation of the magnesium-aluminum-zinc alloys.

General-purpose extrusions with good properties and moderate costs, and forgings with good mechanical properties; used in the as-fabricated (F) temper.  This alloy is used in sheet form for battery applications only.

The AZ80A alloy has greater strength than AZ61A and requires the slowest rate of deformation of the magnesium-aluminum-zinc alloys. To develop maximum properties, both AZ80A and ZK60A are heat treated to the artificially aged (T5) condition; AZ80A may be given the T6 solution heat treatment, followed by artificial aging to provide maximum creep stability.  AZ80A is not available in hollow shapes. Typical applications include extruded products and press forgings.

The ZK60A is used where high strength and good toughness are required. This alloy is heat treatable and is normal used in the artificially aged (T5) condition. Alloy ZK60A has essentially the same strength as AZ80A but with greater ductility. To develop maximum properties, both AZ80A and ZK60A are heat treated to the artificially aged (T5) condition; AZ80A may be given the T6 solution heat treatment, followed by artificial aging to provide maximum creep stability. Typical uses include extruded products and press forgings with high strength and good ductility.
