The 5086 alloy is a medium-to-high strength non-heat-treatable alloy. This alloy has good weldability and is more formable than alloy 5083. As it is resistant to stress corrosion cracking and exfoliation, it is extremely popular in the marine industry. 5086 is commonly used in the construction of ship hulls (due to stress corrosion cracking resistance), pressure vessels, and applications requiring greater formability than 5083, limited to operating in temperatures less than 150oF.
